I never used the paper gaskets because I heard too many stories about the hassles to get the bolts to line up.
So I use just the valley pan and for sealing, (probably overkill, but I don't want to hunt down vacuum leaks) I use Permatex Hylomar. It's a blue colored goo that's sticky like honey. It's impervious to oil and gasoline and will never dry out.
I spread a thin amount with my finger around each port opening on both sides of the valley pan.
(The sticky Hylomar also helps to keep it from shifting around when I drop on the intake manifold.)
Before I set on the intake manifold I apply some Right Stuff to the corners and to the front and back edges where the hold-down bars go.
Never had a problem doing it this way.
