Just how "pre-1970" is it? The 68-70 rears were wider than the 65-67 units, something like an extra 1/2" per side. On a fat-fender Duster, you MIGHT be able to get away with a 17x9 or 17x10 Mustang-type wheel with ~6.4" of backspace. If you're using the narrower 65-67 unit, you may not be able to tolerate that much BS, but there are other wheel options in the Mustang family.
I'm running the 65-67 rear in my Valiant, and with 17x8-5.7"BS wheels and 245/45 tires, I've got a fat inch to the springs on the inside and ~1/2" to the outer wheel well (slightly massaged, not rolled).
