Hey Gang,

I'm looking at potentially buying a A12 car and was curious as to how to decode the fender tag. I understand how to decode the 69 tag's info with no problem, but it's the first two lines that I'm having a hard time deciphering. Not being an A12 expert, I'm noit sure where to lool. Any ideas?

Thanks !

Here's a speed-decode for what you posted:

23117 = gates and stuff that even after reading the Lynch Road assembly story I still can't pinpoint what it all means. Only thing I know is the third number is always a "1" The next number is some kind of sequence or production number that is usually about a 1,000 numbers less than the VIN sequence give or take a couple hundred, again too confusing and no rhyme or reason for me The third set of numbers are a no brainer if you have a VIN tag....it's the VIN with the 9 = 1969, A = Assembly Plant Code for Lynch Road Assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan, the last are the sequence numbers 255789.

Now the next line would tell Body-In-White that this car is to start out with a 383-4bbl road runner or Super Bee engine with a heater firewall and a 4-speed will be bolted to it. The 999 means it gets a "special axle" and in this case a 4.10 Dana with big 11 inch brake backing plates bolted to it. The 603 confirms the 4-speed but this one is the Hemi 4-speed.

All A12's started out as 383 cars and then the A12 Package was added to the base car, the E63 was left on the fender tag and the A12 was added and the 26 for 26 inch radiator.......

There I've managed to get everything screwed up and wrong and totally muddied the water, hope this helps

Would the "603" tranny designation on a A12 car really mean nothing more than the car was an original 23-spline 4-speed 383 road runner with a future transformation into a M-code car? I mean the original E63 code is still there. So, in essence, wouldn't the complete 383 drivetrain be removed and replaced with a 440-6bbl and a 18-spline A833? I thought in '69, "605" would have meant 18-spline HD A833.
