It could have been. When I pulled the coupler off of the steering shaft the broken pieces fell to the floor. The other shoe stayed on the shaft due to the grease around it. Never thought about checking the original orientation since when the one side fell I didn't know it was broken.
I doubt it was in wrong but it's possible.
When looking at the broken shoe it's as though it was a cold break in the metal. Don't know if it was a stress break or not.
