For a full rebuild, a standard pump should do fine. I did a backyard hone'n're-ring so I went with a hv pump. The excess pressure is by passed right back to the pan, so I don't think it's a problem at all. But then I do also run a 7 quart pan/pickup. On a worn motor or one with fully grooved bearings, I'd say the HV is a good choice, on a fresh motor with regular bearings IMO the HV pump is unnecessary.
