I am running a 8546 distributor, a blaster 2 coil and a msd 6al2. I have the system wired up and I am running the original ballast resistor.

Am I losing any HP doing this?

The MSD only uses the voltage from the old ballast wire connection to let the box know the ignition is turned. If you check the voltage on both sides of the ballast resistor they should be almost identical (maybe 0.1 volt drop?) because the MSD unit only pulls a very small amount of current on that line. You could remove the Ballast resistor just to eliminate the extra parts and connections, but the MSD unit will be putting out the same amount of power either way.
