The 383 car was the only one in running condition when filming wrapped up. The 383 Challenger was stolen by a hooker who was hanging around the set,and had to be retrieved so filming could be completed. It was used to tow the 67 Camaro packed with explosives into the bulldozers using a cable devise that released when the line had tension on it. When Chrysler executives saw the private screening of the film, they were absolutely appalled by the drug use and nudity in the film, and they disassociated Chrysler Corporation from the movie, and demanded all the Chrysler vehicles used in the film be returned to Chrysler immediately! An employee who worked at the Chrysler proving grounds said he remembered seeing a trailer load of white beat up 70 Challergers arrive at the proving ground facility, and he believes after being evaluated, they were destroyed. None of the cars from the original 1971 movie have ever been found to this day. The Vanishing Point movie cars that have been on displayed are from the 1997 remake of the film, from which all but one of the Challengers survived filming, The one that didn't survive was a 73 Challenger that was used in the final crash scene of the film.

I believe this to be the 100% true story, because there isn't even a CREDIT to Chrysler Corporation during the movie end credits. Generally, if a corporation provided goodies for a movie to use, it was in lieu of promotional consideration; hence generally a LARGE credit to the tune of "Vehicles provided to this porduction by Chrysler Corporation" or something like that. There is NO such credit at all in the existing print of VP. So, Chrysler must have had a BEEF with this film to throw away their promotional consideration credit in a fairly big budget production.
