Two words: LOW BID.

Before the bobtails, Air Force had AGE (aerospace ground equipment) Tractors. Gas-engine Ford Industrial tractors with a weird rear-entry tandem cab. The first bobtails were Chevy and Ford with gas inline-6 engines.



Agreed, You tend to see a lot more of these bobtail things on military bases as opposed to general aviation airports.
