Yes, they could be trouble-prone back in the day - went through it.
Similar to the way Mopar ballast resistors have had issues; they don't all fail, obviously, but there's a history of such.
I don't know how you extrapolated my comments into "they're junk" or whatever.
I was merely and obviously relating known history and suggesting where to look for the OP's problem.
