GM did a pass-through deal on trucks (half PU, half SUV) many years back.
As I recall, they had issues, not the least of which was leaking.
I haven't seen one around in years, yet every other PU and SUV ever made is all over my area.

When it comes to electronics, modules & such in vehicles from the '90s are already trouble-prone, even though they seem much simpler systems.
(Granted, that's 30 years, but everything electrical on my 50-year-old cars continues to work fine.)
Complexity is a problem.
