whatever one decides to do, use a kit or start from scratch, make sure to sketch out a diagram of the circuits in the system. a simple pencil drawing will do. unless, of course, you are an engineer or architect having lots of colored pencils and a compass and straight edge. all kidding aside, a schematic of the system will be of great value if any trouble[s] arise in the future.
