I know that on one certain motorcycle VIN there were asterisks at the beginning and end as sort of security so no additional characters could be place in those positions, wonder if that was the same reason for the asterisks on those VIN tags????

A majority of manufacturers back in the day used the asterisks on their tags as "security asterisks" to define the beginning and or ending of a VIN sequence, in current production years the number of asterisks and or their location depending on the manufacture denote US, Canadian or Mexican production
