If the buttons are not in, removing the center again to install them is a lot easier and cheaper that buying and pressing on new bearings.

if its an aftermarket sure grip they have a much smaller thrust spacer for some reason...my 3:73 i picked up would not adjust same as yours... just reinstalled my old 3:55 and its fine.. its 100% thrust spacer related ..good luck
I have encountered a few, new aftermarket 10/12 bolt GM differentials that the C-clips for the axle retention wouldn't fit. So it may depend on what he's dealing with
