Our country has turned into a sad mess. What ever happened to "Buy when you can pay for it"?

Really in these times I can get a new car with 1k to me at delivery, no payments for six months, I can dam near do anything currently on credit as it seems most segments of society are willing, so what keeps people from going buck wild? It seems like its wide open with little checks and balances anymore.
