I did this a long time ago, I think i separated it at the transmission end.
I hope someone who's done it recently will verify!

On my '76 with an NP203 i pulled the engine at the same time and left the transfer case chained up under the truck.
Your NP208 isn't as heavy so you might not need to do this!
