741’s are underestimated, but they do have one issue. Not a large number of choices for new gears. 741 and 742 both have shims controlling pinion preload. Assuming all bearings are good and it was set correctly to begin with, pop off the pinion nut and change the seal. A set up pinion bearing is the way to go, so you don’t have to press off your new bearing to change your shim stack.
