I suspect the engine was fine as it was designed for and used for many years in boats. I would bet that the adaption to road use and the major re-tooling required for all part manufacturing, assembly, testing, etc, due to the major increase in volume is where things went wrong.

The EcoDiesel is not the first over the road application of this motor.
Maserati for one has used the 3.0 in a twin turbo, Non EGR variant.
EGR's are a huge issue with these, many owners have had multiple cooler failures and the EGR sticking open leads to the plastic intake manifold melting and burning the truck down.
I have had zero problems but the only reason I still own it is the factory emissions V08 recall gives you a huge extension in emissions warranty.
