it needs to be both. if you only connect to one, say the driver's door, they will only light when you open the driver's door.
Aren't the door switches tied in parallel along with the dome light switch on the instrument lamps ???
that could be a possible "it depends" situation. i have fixed too many wiring issues over the years, i just can't remember.
even so, i "think" hooking into the door switches would still make the footwell lights work with the dome light switch on the dash. [maybe]
