Right - I've checked and repacked the front bearings during the investigation.
Double checked them, backed off and re-tweaked the spindle nut, the bearings are good, smooth and tight.

Thanks for describing the jacking/prybar method to check the lower ball joint, I think I know what to do.
Your goal was to re-create that up/down movement in the ball joint, I'll give it a try in the morning.
I hope I find the answer there.
