The brass synchro rings have a taper on them with grooves on the inside of them that acts as a friction brake to stop the gear on the output shaft when you push the slider forward onto them so the slider will engage both locking it onto the output shaft once you let the clutch pedal out work shruggy

You are correct It was the brass synchro ring bearing that hung up on the taper.
