My guess is clear coat by itself may have rust show up under it eventually. You could paint it silver, but it will look painted instead of real steel.

Maybe ECS RPM or something like that?

I suppose you could wipe it down with a thin grease and then buff the excess off with a cloth. There would still be a light film left that would block moisture from getting to the metal.
