Quick history on trans. Came from an 84 5.2 4x4, was supposedly "rebuilt" and had been installed and removed due to NOT WORKING. I didn't and don't know the symptoms and was not bright enough to check input endplay or air check before disassembly.
Upon disassembly found incorrect sized bushing in FORWARD clutch input shaft so extreme wobble was peasant at shafts piloted joint and the 3 tab thrust plate and a very thin thrust shim was present. Rear drive train clearance .022.. New clutches throughout, second gear band, seal rings, seals, bushings and all of the thrust bushings are new except the forward #4 four pinion planetary bushing (LOOKS and measures GOOD). The correct per ATSG .063 fiber (#2 fiber thrust washer) between front and rear clutch packs also present and to spec. The selectable pump fiber washer was .084... 4x4 tail shaft housing installed and everything was reinstalled without pump gasket, input end play .142 hanging vertically tail down. Replaced the pump selectable for .104 and at.122 but the .015 gasket is not on the pump yet so that will be.135 with gasket crush when its installed.
Questions
#1 Where should I shim so as to keep seal rings happy, shaft wobble minimal and is there a chart with hard part specifications?
#2 Should I use Red fiber first reverse band WITH or WITHOUT GROOVES? This is in a street R/C that mud drags, hill climbs, truck pulls and weekend wheeling.
#3 A good 727 transmission rebuild book that maybe gives specs?
#4 A spring for governor getting me a 5200 second to third shift? any suggestions?
