MDS lifters have the bleed hole in the side. Non-MDS lifters do not. That's the main visual difference I believe. I know they take different yokes as well. It's possible the machining at the top of the lifters, where they engage the yokes, is different. Someone with more knowledge will chime in and clear up the confusion hopefully...
