My dad bought one years ago and it broke, had a local guy fix it. He said one of the biggest issue with GER was they used cheap bearings. He reworked it and we ran it for 10 years til I finally broke it a 2nd time and had it repaired again. I would think it really all depends on what you are going to use the convertor for. If your looking for a really good all out race convertor, prob not the best to have it reworked. (I prefer 8" for race cars) Something for street/strip prob be okay to have it reworked.
