Can you even put one out?

As I recall the stuff can spontaneously combust in water.

If water is used on a magnesium fire, the magnesium burns SO HOT it breaks down the water molecule and uses the oxygen for more fuel to the fire while also putting off flammable hydrogen.

The metals that DO spontaneously combust in water are lithium, sodium, potassium, etc... one column over on the periodic table from Mg.

The examples used in putting out Mg fires in my hazchem class were VW bugs and buses, which were prone to being on fire on the side of the road, and had magnesium engine blocks.
