Torsion bars started in 1957 and lasted through 1989.

Torsion bars are a very cool, engineering-wise, way to spring a car. Easy ride height adjustment, easy spring rate changes and so on. BUT, the doggone torsion bars need that Gibraltar of a crossmsmber to anchor them, and the bars can get in the way of headers and other gear.

The last few years were the transverse torsion bars which were simply wrong for any kind of performance driving, Things like excessive bump steer are part of the design. And I know they were used on the cop cars but that was from necessity, Chrysler didn't have anything else to sell to cops.
