When working under the dash, always start by removing the negative battery cable.
No need to loosen the dash. Depending on the length and routing on the radio antenna cable, you may have to remove it from the radio to move it out of the way.

1) Remove the console top plate, unbolt console and slide it back
2). Remove the flat support strap on the interior side
3). Remove the defroster tubes
4). Unplug the wires from the resistor
5). The main wire harness is clipped on to the drivers side of the box, remove the harness from the clip
6). Drain coolant and remove heater hoses at firewall
7). Blow air into the heater core to remove the coolant
8). Heat and selector cables, I like to remove the whole selector panel from the cluster and push it forward out of the dash, then leave all cables attached at bothe ends. Remove all the cables and controls with the box.
9). unbolt the vent cable handle from below the dash
10). tape closed the tubes or use a small diameter cap to seal them. The cap will need to pass through the holes in the firewall, so duct tape is best.
11) Remove the 3 firewall bolts
12). Pull box out from the firewalltowards the rear of the car until the tubes are through the firewall holes, rotate the box so the tubes point to the floor and the box comes right out of the car.
13). The firewall side of the box has a bolt on sheet metal cover to remove and get at the core.
