Why no wheelie bars?

EGO...

IMO The Camaro that went airborne would have been saved with bars.

Has NOTHING to do with ego or "stupidity". Most radial racing, wheelie bars are NOT allowed, so these cars are set up to run without them. While they are allowed at THIS race in THIS class, most choose not to use them, because they never have.

I have seen Dewayne Mills car make hundreds of passes. NEVER seen it do that. He said it pushed the front up a little because of a new trans gear set up he was trying and then the throttle hung. Plus, at that speed, it would have just folded the bars up anyway, just as it did on the Mustang that did the same thing down there a few years ago. These cars run nearly 200 in the 1/8 and they are heavy. You get a big gulp of air under a car that fast, at that weight, it IS going airborne and bars would NOT save it.

Monte...would it have even got up high enough to catch air if the bars were low enough to keep the car down in the first place?

Radial cars are NOT set up to run bars. If they touch early, it knocks the tires off. Therefore the guys that DO use them at times, in testing or whatever, run them high and are only useful early in the run. What has not been stated, was that this happened at about the 400 ft mark. The car was making a nice clean pass, with the front wheels about 4" in the air like it always does. Then it just quickly snapped the front up. At that speed, with bars a foot or so off the ground, they would have never even slowed it down. As I said, the same thing happened to Dennis Bailey a few years ago and his car had bars. When this happens, the FULL weight of the car is on the bars........they simply fold up.

This was NOT a wheelstand per say. The car just got the front up a little, air got under it and it "flew". We see it happen in Pro-Stock and cup cars all the time. Get a cushion of air under them and they are GONE. Most of the cars have full belly pans. That's an awful big "wing" to catch air running at nearly 200

Why don't those gazillion $$$$$$ shocks stop that??

When you get 3000hp you will understand. Oh wait that won't happen
