We say 1/2" UNF and you say 1/2" 20. Also you never hear the term lug nuts in the UK, we call them wheel nuts. So what I meant to say was, if you are looking for a nut for the steering wheel you can use a lug nut, just cut or turn the tapered part off. Hmmm. Two people separated by a common language! LOL! I would not want to use a "wheel" nut or a lug nut. The proper nut for the steering wheel nut is a self locking nut and a lug nut is not.
