I did mine that way too with my 79 and I had no problem getting all the screws out without breaking anything.
My new heater core was almost the size of the plate too and a couple of the screw holes didn't line up so I had to cut them a bit.


My new heater core was the same way. Plate was bigger but still fit fine and had to massage a couple of the mounting holes.
