The roof on my '69 Coronet 500 had surface rust, and after sanding, and acid cleaning, prep wiping... I used a thin coat of the PPG etching primer? Not even sure it was a primer, maybe an adheasion promoter, it was really thin and almost clear/yellow color (this was 20-years ago.) I then used the Epoxy primer over that.

If you used an acid metal prep then used an etch primer(sounds like the 1791 if memory is good) you got lucky if it's still on. The preach big time don't acid metal clean(dx579) then etch prime as its to much acid on metal and can cause adheasion issues. It's not as bad as if you sandblasted something then metal prepped cause there a person will not get the acid out of the sandblasting profile.
