The SO aka VON is actually the first number assigned to a specific vehicle. Typically the number came from the individual order sheet provided at the dealer or sales bank. (Specialty VONs are another topic).
The SO number was administrative in nature and used to track the vehicle through the ordering, invoicing and billing before the VIN was assigned and before assembly. The SO ties to the VIN through documentation like invoices, window stickers, broadcast sheets, IBM inspection cards and other factory documents.
