From what I have been told, the VR-1 20W-50 in the silver bottle is a good off the shelf oil for use in above freezing temps. My understanding is that the other "Valvoline Racing" (non-VR1) oils in the black bottles are non-detergent oils. Their intent is that they are in the car for a short period of time, like a race weekend, then changed. Because they lack a detergent as part of the additive package, they have a very short life cycle on the street. The Porsche engine builder I spoke with thought you "might" get 1000-1400 miles out of it before he'd recommend changing it for sure. In general, he advised against using Racing Oils for a traditional 3000 mile drain interval.

Brad Penn brand also seems to be a name that keeps coming up as a good oil.
