That's pretty much what I used to do to paint model car dashboards. If the paint is "too white" you can add a little (and I mean a LITTLE) yellow, brown or green to tint the white a bit. I'm not sure exactly what shade the dial tends to lean towards, but Testors paints are so cheap it's easy to experimant. Also, once you have to color, you might want to thin it a bit so it will flow into all the nooks and crannies on the dial better.
