The one that I use now is from a '90 Dakota. Maybe it's just plain worn out. It's a pain in the butt to change mine. I don't want to do all of that work for the same result.

Yes they are. The one tube comes within a little less than a 1/4" of the starter. You may be on to something. I had thought that around 1/4" would be enough clearance.
