I recently bought a 4WD 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was thinking of
doing a modest 2" or 2.5" lift using the typical aftermarket coil spring spacers.
I was told by a mechanic ( 40 years in the business) that owns an independent shop...
that by doing this, would drastically affect the steering capabilities of the Jeep. In his words...
" You're steering would be all screwed up". Anyone here, do this modest lift on a Jeep? Is it better to swap to different/longer coil springs/shocks/steering damper??
What were your results? TIA.

2-2.5 inches isn't that much lift...And "the steering will be all screwed up" aspect doesn't care how you get to the lift numbers be it spacers or new coils..Go to a site like Jeep Cherokee forums and look for the lift chart that tells you when the steering components run into trouble at certain heights... I'm betting at that modest lift there won't be any issues...

I've put each of my kids in WJs. I've purchased three of these over the last seven years. One of the three had the 2" lift with spacers. The spacers were actually closer to 1.5" and it allowed us to run a 2" taller tire. It drove no differently than the two without the spacers and did not handle so adversely that I was afraid to put a 16 year old in it. It did ride and corner a bit better when we put better shocks on it than what we bought it with.

Any lift does alter the steering link angle from stock, but at 2", it isn't a radical deviation that introduces a load of problems.
