Sway Bar Dimensions

Sway Bar Dimensions - 09/10/16 04:26 PM

So we're having a really hard time finding a sway bar for our 24 Hours of Lemons Valiant (see: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/2076847/re-24-hours-of-lemons.html) that will keep us under budget. I was wondering if someone with an OEM bar could take some measurements based on the diagram below so I can scour the junkyard and see if I can find something that's close in size from something late model (pre 1980 cars are non existent in junkyards here).

Data I have based on some bars in my garage is below. However, I believe the A body unit I have is a '74 and there are variations to earlier bars that I do not have. I also have an added dimension in a straight line from your dimension A to C but do not have the overall width, dim C

70+ B and E body A=27" B=10.125" C=no data D=8"
pre 70 B A=27" B=19.5" C=no data D=17.5"
A body A=23.5"B=15.5" C=no data D=12.25

I'd love to get more info on other options out there as well.

GM F bodies and GM trucks may be options. You can always trim the link arm length down to what you need.

You are looking for a 67-72 a-body front bar, correct?

The 66-69 b-body bar is very close and just about 1" wider overall. End link bushing could be tweaked in lemons fashion to fit.

Do you have away bar tabs on your LCA's? If not you could fit a narrower bar eyelet to eyelet if the other dimensions worked. The aftermarket Hotchkis bar is like that. You'd loose rate, but that could be made up by a thicker bar.

I've held a 1999 Durango rear bar up to the 8-3/4 in my '67 Barracuda. Looks like a good fit.

I haven't looked at the front bar to see if it would be suitable...

Awesome numbers, thanks! I was thinking something along the lines of a Dakota or S10 bar might be close.

What are the differences between pre 72 and 73-76 a body bars? I was under the impression the front suspension was virtually unchanged.

Sorry, should have been more specific, yes, the front is primarily what I'm looking for, rear should be easier and not as essential.

What's the difference between 67-72 and 73+?

No tabs - I'm assuming I'll have to weld some angle iron or something to the front of the LCA to attach the end link to.

Tab location changed.

Early A bodies are different than later ones as well.

Re: Sway Bar Dimensions - 09/12/16 04:17 AM

Late bar needs the bottom of the k-member opened up for the bar to pass through. It will not work on an unmodified 67-72 k-member.

Re: Sway Bar Dimensions - 09/12/16 07:21 AM

I modified a Chevy truck front bar for my 70 Charger. The 70-72 B body K member has the sway bar passing through the K like the 73-76 A body cars. My bar is 1.25" solid and came from a 73-87 Chevy 3/4 ton or 1 ton 2wd. I just had to shorten the ends and drill to mount end links.
$20 or so for the bar and $15 for a guy to drill the holes for the end links.

i was just thinking the set up you used. this could apply in this instance as well if the OP is willing, and has the time to look around and find something that could be made to work. i believe it would be in the true spirit of the lemons intent as well.

Years ago I put the front sway bar from an 89 Ram into my 64 300, Tape measure told the tale.

I'm sorry, I missed if you are running 67-72 or 73-76 K.member. I have the hot ticket if 73-76.
