Title of thread: Random-meaning it doesn't have to be specific to you. MOPAR DRAG RACE-required subject matter pic of the day-meaning one pic per day per person. C'mon people, it ain't rocket science!
Required disclaimer: In no way am I implying that I have had a pm discussion with the OP, so my interpretation may have no relevance whatsoever. Oh, and of course, I'm joking, so if I just rolled my 255/60 drag radials over your toes, I apologize in advance.

Dad's one and only NHRA National Event. "It's too crowded, and there were too many people walking around in the pits. It made me nervous just trying to get to and from the lanes in the race car!" We thought he would love it...we were wrong.

Didn't that car used to say something else other than Dream Chaser? I want to say Don Graham for some reason.

Yes, Dad bought the car, trailer, and all spares from Don Graham who raced the Challenger in the Tulsa area for many years. Dad eventually sold it less engine to a friend of mine from Northern California who repainted it orange. He ran it in Division Seven SST for five or six years but eventually sold it to buy a 91 Daytona race car. Not sure who has it now.

At the time those cars had a hard time legally making weight. Those were non functioning "traction bars". I am pretty sure this car also had a gas tank shield, for safety of course.

I’ll join in. My ‘72 Demon I bought in ‘83 when I was 15. Raced it through the 90’s, it sat for a while (life - marriage, kids) Last pic is just last week. Just got off the rotisserie, hope to race it this summer.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 02/15/1907:20 PM
Originally a Plum Crazy Hemicuda, converted to Pro Stock by Bob Mazzolini, then a bracket car. This photo was probably from the last 80's. Not a bad car for $7,500.

That combo is P/SA at today's standards. He may have lightened it to bump up to O. That's not a stock oil pan. A velocity stack in stock? Thought it funny that it has a cylinder head company as a sponsor. That might get you to several trips to the barn. This is one cool race car.

I brought this 64 Savoy Wagon from a member here, enjoyed it for a couple years then sold it to my cousin who has been bracket racing it and cruising it around town.

Unfortunately yes..... it is. Unloaded the slicks and came down hard.. Bent the frame rails, ruined the K member, just caught the pan bowing it in the back enough for the flex plate bolts to contact it. Trashed the headers, pulled the threads out of #8 exhaust port. Small block..... who knew!

Biggest visual issue with those wheels/tires is the offset. Move them out to the quarter panel and that would sure help the appearance. But a single headlight 64 sure does get my blood pumping.

That is the first time I've seen Shahan and Butch Leal name use together, let alone on one of his cars If my memory is correct Shirley Shahan won the 1965 NHRA Winternationals (SP?) in her A990 1965 Plymouth race Hemi SS car Butch was probably around 19 yrs old then

Shirley's husband HL Shahan worked on Leal's 65 car. That's why Shahan is on the car.

So that was my ride. I got it as a gutted roller from Tank. Updated it 25.5 car, wired the car, plumbed it, put the powertrain in, had exhaust built, new shifter, racepak with racepak gauges etc. It kills my soul a little bit to see how it looks today. I normally don't bash other peoples rides, but i think i can be slightly critical in this case.
The wheels that were on the car could accommodate the 10.5W if he had converted it to a bead lock, and the car would look normal. Or he could have had wheels made the correct offset and width.
The Bubak thing.... No words....
The hood scoop kills me. Just because of the hours of work, engineering, and effort to slam the motor low enough in the car to make the CNC tunnel / cross ram fit under the factory scoop, and it did, and sealed to the bottom of the hood.
Seems like the car still runs good, so that is cool, glad the guy is enjoying it, its a fun ride. Part of me wishes we had hung on to it, but i couldn't pass up getting my old 64 plymouth back.

Do you know which year Plymouth and dodge B bodies are uglier than the 1962? The 1961 I had a 1962 Fury M.W car that someone had swap the 413 M.W out of it and installed a 361 before I got that car, they left the complete original M.W exhaust system on it and I didn't know that the car wasn't a stock 361 car with that exhaust system on it, I should have known to keep it but I didn't

That car looks a little like the old Humphry and Lambeck car after Humphry and his other partner (probably Cooper, CRS disease)) set the NHRA Pro Stock ET and MPH record at the old Fremont, CA track a long time ago. Bob Lambeck had Humphrey add his name on the car and remove the other guys name on the car after it set the record

Hilarious - the car that crashes has a top mounted blower at the beginning and down track, starts to spin and has a front mounted blower then during the rescue the top mounted blower is on the ground.
And I wonder why the flag man with the Christmas Tree. Must have been for the movie crowd.

When the pinion gear is climbing the ring gear lifting the front end off the ground the rear tires are not going as fast as they can forward One of the old Mopar drag engineers made a good statement about wheelies and how high they need to be, He said when the front tires are off the ground 1.0 inch all the cars weight is on the rear tires
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 09/11/2102:09 AM
But Cab, fess up. You know dang well that your favorite pics of your cars have 'em hangin' the hoops! You fellers might like this one, too. IIRC, this was the first, or one of the first A/SA cars to post a sub-10 time slip. It's a really, REALLY nice rig. (And pretty trick, too.)
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 09/11/2105:42 AM
I ended up changing my front shocks on my S/P car to make them stiffer to kill some of the wheelie height and improve the 60 ft. times down to 1.24 last year. I'm running the car this weekend (2nd time this year) and hoping for more improvements on the 60 ft. and the rest of the track

I've never seen that picture I don't remember my name on that car I had owned and raced it and then sold it to John Canfield minus the motor and trans. He was the Cornwell dealer in our area, I ended up selling him a across ram hemi motor with pushbutton trans out of another car I had bought. John ask me to help him race the car in NHRA S/ST and I drove it for about 4 months, he went with me to some NHRA division races and learn how to drive and race it better than me Thanks for the picture and memories: up:
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/24/2206:11 PM
I own that car several different times, I sold it to Jesse Martinson the first time as a street car. it was a 1970 340 4 speed duster that had been total in a wreck and fixed by the guy I bought it from, he had put a T/A 340 motor out of a stolen T/A that had been burnt., it was minus the six pack and he strip the Duster to lighten it, no interior, single fiberglass bucket seat with a 5 point roll bar, no instrument cluster, radio, heater, no nothing. He raced on the streets of San Bernardino before I got it. I swap the rear gears from the 3:55 to a set of 4:89 and kick everybody butt in the high desert Victorville, Apple Valley area and ended up selling it to Jesse about 4 month later. Enough on this, thanks for posting the Video
"Long before funny cars made 11,000hp and took flight at drag strips, machines like the Marv Eldridge owned 1970 Dodge LA Challenge ruled the strips of the nation. Yeah, the top fuel cars were quicker and faster in 1970 but nothing was more popular than funny cars at that point in history and this was one of the better known machines for a brief moment in the sun during the 1970 season. Now it sits in the central hall at SEMA next to a John Force Racing car as a reminder of the evolution that this sport has seen over the last 46 years.
This is not a recreation of the car, this is the actual car that raced around the country in 1970 and was later hammered on by a succession of owners before being brought back to life as its original and freshened self. The chassis was built by Ronnie Scrima in 1969 for “Fearless Fred” Goeske. He drove it for a year and sold it to Marv Eldridge who owned the Fiberglass Trends company.
Marv stuck the 1970 Challenger body on the chassis and was fortunate enough to be a very early member of the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Funny Car Stars that toured the nation, match racing on a whirlwind schedule. After racing the car, Marv sold it and the thing became a true wandering soul passing hands between a bunch of owners, ultimately ending up back east in Pennsylvania before heading to Texas.
When it was in Texas Pete Eastwood bought it, bought it back to California and it is currently in the hands of the man who restored it in such incredible fashion. The body is the original 1970 Challenger Fiberglass Trends piece, the engine is a Mike Kuhl built 392ci hemi based 5/8th stroker, a B&M Torqueflite transmission, Strange full floating spool equipped 9″ Ford rear end, and Koni shocks.
The thing is awesome, spotless, and a true look back into the history of the sport we love the best around here! Check out some images below."

I'm pretty sure this is the Hemi Cuda the McCandless family restored and has in its collection. It was not Sox & Martin's 1970 Pro Stocker. This Barracuda ran in an heads-up AHRA eliminator called GT-1.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/15/2212:31 AM
Was that the car he crashed match racing in Pro Stock back east years ago? I don't remember seeing that car with his name on it or any other time: confused:
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/15/2203:39 AM
I believe that was the Duster they built for David Sox to run in Super stock in IHRA. We beat him in eliminations but I can't remember what round it was in.

Sox & Martin's SS-2 Duster was not a Pro Stocker if you are referring to it. SS stood for Super Stock. Not the regular Stock Eliminator but IHRA's heads-up version of it, a Jr. Pro Stock.. Ditto AHRA. And the number next to it designated it Super Stock 1, Super Stock 2 and Super Stock 3 (SS-1, SS-2 & SS-3) along with AHRA's similar GT-1, GT-2 and GT-3. They were all heads-up eliminators, i.e., no handicap start, same as Pro Stock.
SS-1 and GT-1 were for cars with big block engines (e.g., 427 cu.in.), SS-2 and GT-2 were for cars with medium displacement engines (e.g., 350 cu.in.) and SS-3 and GT-3 were for cars with small cubic inch, small block engines (e.g., 302 cu.in.).
If I remember correctly, the SS-1 and GT-1 cars were allowed multiple carburetion, the SS-2 and GT-2 car were limited to a single four barrel and the SS-3 and GT-3 cars were only allowed a two barrel carburetor.
What led to the the demise of these heads-up categories were a handful of cars (like Scott Shafiroff's Camaro below) that eventually dominated these eliminators. Same old drag racing story, man with the biggest bucks and/or best brains rules the class.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/23/2201:01 AM
Speaking about 1964 Plymouth Belvederes, how many people know that Tritak & Morgan also ran a 1964 hardtop in addition to their more familiar 1963 Belvedere station wagon?
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/23/2201:13 AM
Ha, you could today pull into the staging lanes with Billy Stepp's Dart Sport and it would not look out of place one bit. Change the wheels and hood scoop and no one would be the wiser. That's how far ahead of their time Pro Stock cars and cars that were similarly constructed (e.g., gassers) were back then, only 49 years ago and how little things have changed since then in regards to how the average drag car looks like today. Think about it.
Now, go back in time less than ten years from 1973 to 1965. Drag cars were crude in comparison and if you pulled into the staging lanes in 1973 with an state of the art doorslammer drag car from 1965 it would definitively not fit in with the other cars in the staging lanes.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/23/2201:40 AM
Allread & Glover's Super Stock/K, 4-speed, 400 cu. in., 1972 Plymouth Road Runner. Check out the Air Grabber hood. I thought the fresh air option was cancelled for 1972? All the 1972 Road Runners I've ever seen had the non-Air Grabber hood.

Bummer. Sorry to hear that.
I remember when the Lee Bros. set the record with a non-Barton Hemi some 20 odd years ago.

Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/27/2204:17 AM
Behind Bud Hoerth on Englishtown Rd., Saturday morning early November 1989, on the way to the BRUSA Nationals race at Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ. I had my camera bag next to me on the front seat of my 1973 4-dr. Chevrolet Caprice Classic (a freebie c/o of my uncle) so I said, why not? Let me snap a photo while I was stopped at the light
The next two photos of the Bud Man are from June of 1988 and sometime in (circa) 1990.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/27/2204:23 AM
Mopar Atlantic Nationals, early 1990s.
This survivor, very low mileage, all original as raced back in the day, 383 cu.in. 1968 Road Runner was featured in an early 1990's issue of Mopar Collector's Guide. Some of you may have seen it.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/27/2204:28 AM
Lori Johns and Frank Hawley (below) followed by Shirley Muldowney and their respective Top Fuel dragsters, 1989 NHRA Summernationals, Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/27/2204:37 AM
Mopars at Englishtown (same event later re-named Mopar Atlantic Nationals in the early 1990s), June of 1989 or 1990--I forget which--and because none of the photos I took back then have any date printed on the back of them!
Who remembers this wedge cylinder block to 426 HEMI head conversion block? The way to go if you couldn't find an original (or affordable) 426 HEMI block in the 1980s and before the re-release of the 426 HEMI cylinder block by Mopar Performance in 1992. I forget the name of the two guys whose shop did the conversion.
The 1969 Road Runner pictured below had a 426 HEMI in its engine compartment based upon this modified wedge block. If you didn't know this (and didn't look closely) you'd swear it was the real McCoy.

Cool! I was hoping someone would recognize somebody in these pix. Where were they from? For sure they weren't Raceway Park (Englishtown) regulars.
Those photos were from the Mopar Atlantic Nationals circa 1993.
They were Lebanon Valley folks. I raced with them from about 83 (when Connecticut Dragway closed) to 1996 when I moved to Ohio. I would have guessed early 90's based on Debbo's ET - she got faster in the early 90's. Was 11 seconds before that.
I also remember one time standing in the staging lanes at LV talking Mopars with Lou Vignogna while waiting for Jimi to make a run in the big wagon.

I ended up sitting next to an old guy who walked with a cane and struck up a conversation with him. Turns out that the guy is Ted Thomas, original driver and co-owner of the original Jade grenade back in the day. He was a modest man, but I pryed. He told me about some of the records that they set. I asked what was the trick to making it so fast. He said lots and lots of nitro! We talked about what it was like to drive a nitro front engine dragster, what it was like to drive through fiery engine explosions, stuff like that. I brought up the story by The Surfers who said they used a very conservative fuel mixture to avoid engine explosions and make more rounds, and asked for his commentary on the difference in their philosophies. He asked "why do you think we called it the Jade grenade!?"

Great pics of Atco and ETown Qwik426 !! .. Thanks ... I have a lot of fond memories of running ETown ... we Won the 11.50 index points title back in 2014 and I did well in Friday night Mean Street points back in 2002 , I went to every Mopar Atlantic Nats except one or two due to rain and I ran 11.50 index there the last few years before it closed. Although Island is my home track I still ran ETown and still go to Atco on occasion.... I still greatly miss ETown !

Thanks for the info. Yes, those photos of Brooks' car are from the 1993 or '94 Mopar Atlantic Nationals.
I never had the chance to strike up a conversation with the Vignonas back in the day but did see their cars many times which were absolutely beautiful.

Thank you! I've only been to Island Dragway a couple of times in 1990 or '91.
Yeah, Englishtown was great. I even worked there during the week from 1992 to 1996. I never imagined that would happen! Lol.
If Vinnie and Richard Napp were still alive I'm pretty sure Raceway Park would still be open for drag racing.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/28/2212:54 AM
Speaking of Island Dragway, here are some pix of Mopars that I took one Saturday afternoon and evening in July or August of 1990 or '91 first time I went there.
This 1970 Coronet had a 426 HEMI in it from what I was told.

Mopars at Englishtown or Mopar Atlantic Nationals circa 1990. Does anyone remember exactly what year the name was changed to the latter? I know it was sometime in the very early 1990s.
For sure this is at least 1990 for that's the year the concrete retaining walls were in place at Raceway Park. That I am 100% sure of.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/28/2201:38 AM
Mopars at Englishtown 1990 I'm pretty sure.
Original Hemi 'Cuda last raced in 1975. Built by Sox & Martin. Check out the luggage rack. Neat trick to improve weight distribution. I never seen it on any other E-body race car. Not much weight, I know, but every bit counts.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/28/2202:42 AM
George Baptiste's 1969 440 Six Barrel Road Runner which he bought new in 1969. A very beautiful car as those who've ever seen it up close will attest. George told me he made the money back that he paid for this Six Barrel bird in a few weeks of street racing in the New York City area. His nephew drove the car at this race.

Thanks again Qwik426. .. some of the cars pictured are still around.... two of the Super Stockers are but haven't been raced in years... from the Island pictures I have raced there for over 30 years and know most of the Mopars ... the burgundy Road Runner was owned by the Scerbo brothers from the Poconos.. the brother that drove the Road Runner passed away a few years ago.. the car is still around repainted orange and was racing at Island a few years ago owned by someone else.. the maroon Super Bee was actually owned by the then track operator , Tony Demarcky and driven by a friend off his.. Tony passed away a few years ago also and his daughter and son in law are the current owners / operators of Island I believe the Super Bee is still around... Bill Hejnars Dart was powered by a small block , he sold it a long time ago and the new owner put a big block in it I haven't seen it in years.. Bill went on to race a small block Daytona in Super Gas and was pretty successful until a giant wheel stand damaged the car and I believe he sold it right afterwards .. he was a good guy I bought a set of headers from him as well as an 8 inch 904 converter I still have today. Jerry Stein actually lives about a 1/2 mile from me and still has the Teachers Pet as well as a few other cars...Al Ruths Gertrude is still around also as a matter of fact I bought a set of Weld Wheels off the front of Gertrude two years ago and they are on my Dart now. Gertrude was in Hi Performance Magazine along with my Dart in an article about 10 second Mopars back in 1988.. The War Wagon has been resurrected and was at a Nostalgia race at Island last year.. Greg Van ess is the owner of the silver early Barracuda it had a small block he also still has it but hasn't raced it in years...Bob Favers 70 Cuda is also still around I talked to him at Atco last year and it has been turned into a street car. The Mopar Atlantic Nats were always so much fun we always had a good time .. Budman ( also in your pictures ) used to sell some of my spare parts for me and I actually made a few bucks sometimes ... Everybody still says Vinny and Richard are rolling over in their graves knowing what happened to their beloved track.

You're welcome! And thank you for giving me some history and updates that I was not aware of such as Tony's passing .
I know Bud Man pretty well. I haven't talked to him in about 15 years though. The first time I seen the Bud Man and his red '65 Plymouth was one Wednesday evening at Raceway Park in 1984 or 1985. "Hmmm...never seen that Mopar before", so I went right over to Bud in the staging lanes and began a conversation. We became Mopar buddies from that point. Seen Bud race many times at RP as he and his brother Rich were Raceway Park regulars and in the points chase. Bud was kind enough to gave me some space at his spot a couple of times in the 1990s during the Fall swap meet at Englishtown so I could sell some of my Mopar parts. I can never say anything except something good about him.
The first time I met Al Ruth was via a phone call he made to me sometime in 1986. He got my number from Jim Koziol (Jack's Auto Parts) who knew I had a 1968 B-body 8 & 3/4 rear for sale. Al was interested in buying it to install in Gertrude which he described to me over the phone and was in the process of transforming from its bone stock state (Slant Six car originally--I think). We couldn't agree upon a price but became friends from that point.
The first time I saw Gertrude was at RP in the late-1980s; it was sporting steel rims on all four corners, faded paint, very nondescript, i.e., a grandma's car (hence the nickname I surmise) and ran low 13-second quarters. Gradually Al made upgrades and worked his way up to some serious horsepower under the hood sometime in the mid-1990s.
Yes, you are correct, Vinny and Richard Napp would not approve. Had they still been alive Raceway Park would still be open for drag racing. I worked at Raceway Park full-time during the week from 1992-1996 and got to know them pretty well, especially Vinny, so I had a pretty good idea of how he and Richard thought and that's why I stated and stand behind what I said.

I don't want to hijack the thread anymore .., but so many of these cars I know about.. like the red 57 Vette racing the Dart Sport. my close friend bought that Vette five years ago ( I went with him to pick it up ) from the previous owner that had it and raced it for 44 years. Still being raced today ! Sorry its not a Mopar but it is such a cool car !

Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/30/2201:07 AM
Ok ..You asked for it... Ernie Topping sold the Dart a long time ago to a guy on Long Island that supposedly still has it..When Ernie had it he set the G/S record at one time and was runner up in Stock at the NHRA Summernationals at Englishtown many years ago... Ernie works at the machine shop that built my present motor and he assisted in the work and tuning... Glen Hartzler sold the yellow Cuda a few years ago and I believe it is still being raced by someone in upstate N.Y. or New England and is now painted blue. Glen now races a 71 / 72 Road Runner in Stock.. the brown 64 and the Endless Journey car are owned by Garage Mazdabrook last I heard from a friend of his is that he still has them... John Baughman ran the Cuda for awhile and also had a 68 Hemi Dart that still races on occasion, John passed away a year or so ago but someone else races the Dart in SS/AH car now. Dave Leclair still has the 67 Native American I think , I heard he is the original owner , it was wrecked and redone awhile back ,he still races it on occasion but I haven't seen it in a few years. Frank Lupo in the Cuda did converters and transmissions I believe he still does under the Dynamic name a guy that used to work for him ( Lenny ) went out on his own and founded Ultimate Converters ( I use them ) he retired and sold the business to one of his employees but still does consulting for them. The SS/ BA shown was also raced by either Frank or Lenny at one point from Connecticut as was the SS/DA Cuda Frank drove before he moved to Delaware and Lenny of Ultimate to North Carolina Seeing the two red 64s racing .. the Franks Inc car was Frank Lupo and a few other guys I think Lenny was a part of the crew also.. the other 64 I think is Jim Morgan seeing the Ceralli Competition Engines sticker on it .. I dynoed my motor there about a month or so ago they built a few of my small blocks. Ernie Topping used to work there when he was racing the Dart. I am not sure as I don't remember the Enforcer Challenger.. I could be wrong but it might be the same car that Ray Cook and Art Leong won a championship with. Nick Reiter still races the 71 Charger is Stock , the Cheap Thrills car and Matt Rovers Challenger are also still out there being raced in Stock. The Bohemeth wagon was sold awhile ago but the Vignognas are still out there racing in a variety of Mopars....Ritter and Weber also had a Duster that ran in Super / Stock that was real fast !! Kent Ritter now makes his own small blocks and a few related pieces and raced an ex Pro Stock Daytona in Comp for awhile, There was a Duster running in Super / Stock last year I thought was being ran by Dave Weber it came from the same area of upstate N.Y. as they were from perhaps the same car redone or a new build. The Maroon Dart Sport racing the Vette was a stick car running in Stock one of the owners used to run it as part of Ken Kopeckys team here in N.J.( as was a silver Volare that Rich Hoerth ( Budmans brother ) drove to the Division One stock championship years ago ) was sold and went to upstate N.Y. I believe a guy here on Moparts had it for awhile and it was for sale in the last few years and possibly someone else has it now. The blue Arrow was raced by Rich Hoerths ex wife Barbara the car was sold to Duane Smith at one point and he raced it before it was wrecked he now has a really fast Dodge Avenger ....I miss the Mopar Atlantic Nats .. so many cool, historic and nice Mopars used to attend.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 04/30/2205:30 PM
Seeking the whereabouts of the 1963 Dodge Coronet Wagon C/SA race car built and campaigned by Bob Repine of Bob's Automotive, Eldred PA. IHRA record holder. Bob is not looking for the car but a couple of us are to looking to find the rest of the story. History. His Hemi-Honker altered wheelbase car was found years ago but was too far gone to be saved. I talked to Bob recently about the wagon and the whereabouts and he can't remember too much back then due to age and when he sold it “we were racing”. As Bob was very good at wining in those days - one of his competitors told me - they would say “Repine is here so just get behind him”. The story about the wagon becoming a race car from being the family wagon is a tale in itself. It ran in 2 different classes giving fierce competition. 10.75 -10.80 ET in 1963.

I forgot about his runner-up finish at the Summernationals!
"the brown 64 and the Endless Journey car are owned by Garage Mazdabrook last I heard from a friend of his is that he still has them..."
Yes, I know George's cars well. I was told by his "Endless Journey" 1963 Plymouth was a former Super Stock car, Max Wedge-powered. I don't know if it's an original one. The brown '64 Belvedere was 383-powered.
"Dave Leclair still has the 67 Native American I think , I heard he is the original owner , it was wrecked and redone awhile back ,he still races it on occasion but I haven't seen it in a few years."
Dave's not the original owner. He bought it from someone (original owner?) who was set to torch the car after stripping it of its drivetrain. At least that's what I read in Mopar Action magazine back in the early 1990s when they featured Dave's RO23 in article.
I have photos of it back in the late-1960s when it was called The AMERICAN in great big letters running along the side of the car. If you enlarge the photos I posted you can faintly make out that name.
"Seeing the two red 64s racing .. the Franks Inc car was Frank Lupo and a few other guys I think Lenny was a part of the crew also.."
I was wondering whose car that was all these years!
"I am not sure as I don't remember the Enforcer Challenger.. I could be wrong but it might be the same car that Ray Cook and Art Leong won a championship with."
I believe you are correct. Cook & Leong has at least two convertibles and one hardtop.
"Nick Reiter still races the 71 Charger is Stock"
I've seen Nick's Charger race seems like forever since at least the late-1970s.
"The Maroon Dart Sport racing the Vette was a stick car running in Stock one of the owners used to run it as part of Ken Kopeckys team here in N.J.( as was a silver Volare that Rich Hoerth ( Budmans brother )..."
I didn't know that.
"drove to the Division One stock championship years ago )"
That, I remember!
"The blue Arrow was raced by Rich Hoerths ex wife Barbara the car was sold to Duane Smith at one point"
Yep, I remember that. I believe that Arrow was originally raced by Steve Schweitzer from Pennsylvania.

Just found these three tonight. The woman standing next to the Sutton and Walls 1964 Plymouth Belvedere, is my mother, Patricia. Tom Walls and my mother were married back in those days and Tom was race partners with Gary Sutton. A few years after Tom and my mother had my little sister in 1964, they would divorce and Tom left the area and racing too. My mother would remain very good friends with Gary Sutton and his wife Barbara. Gary continued racing and would eventually team up with Dave Schmitz, together they raced a A/SA 1970 Plymouth Cuda and remained partners for many years. Gary eventually won the 1991 Winter Nationals in Pomona in the 70 Cuda, his biggest racing achievement I believe. I grew up seeing the Cuda in Gary's home garage when we would go and visit "Uncle Gary and Aunt Barbara" and on a few occasions would go watch him race at the Fremont Drag strip. I didn't know Dave Schmitz back then, but I've spoken to him in recent years. I last saw Gary at my father's funeral a few months after his big win at Pomona.

Thanks Qwik !! I was pretty close on the descriptions .. still really enjoying these photos.. and BigDads also , I've been racing for over 35 years and have seen a lot of Mopars and met a lot of great people and made some really good friends. I was just at Island Dragway 1st Nostalgia race of the year yesterday racing my D150 , there where a quite a few Mopars including some I have never seen before I should have taken some pictures. They have a few Nostalgia races during the year , I believe the next one is Sunday of July 4th weekend , you should try and come.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/02/2212:53 PM
Memory a bit foggy but, I think Gary Sutton married or at very least dated my friends mother .. her name as Jan , this was right about that same time when he won that race

That's great. It ought to be a stunner once finished.

The flying Robin looks great but man, I wish they hadn't have updated it. I have a picture of that car from Englishtown taken in the late 90's in the original paint scheme. Love that car.

I agree. It's a sin to do this kind of modification to such an rust free, intact car, an original Shaker hood car. Those radical mods you do to a rust bucket, a car that's not worth restoring.
This 'Cuda was in excellent shape when I saw it in November of '89 and could have been easily restored back to stock.
I have no idea what powerplant it originally came with, a 340, 383, 440+6 or HEMI. If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say it was a 440+6 'Cuda.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/13/2208:51 PM
Paul Ceasrine's M-code 1969 Barracuda, summer of '89. I didn't get a chance to strike up a conversation with Paul that day but did get to 'meet' him online 20 years later over at the H.A.M.B. forum.
Paul was a very knowledgeable fellow when it came to Mopars and drag racing history; more than that, all around good guy. Unfortunately, he is no longer with us...Paul departed this mortal coil a few years ago, way before his time.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/13/2209:07 PM
Another good guy, Curtis Taylor, Raceway Park weekly competitor, and his Trick Dodge.
Last I heard, Curtis is alive and well and has an even larger stable of Mopars and now resides in Virginia (I believe), far from Brooklyn, NY his original home base.
Curtis' Super Bee is an original 440 Six Pack car.
George Massabrook in his Endless Journey '63 Plymouth in the right lane.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/13/2210:32 PM
A bit of trivia: this 4-speed 1968 HEMI Road Runner coupe was originally purchased new in 1968 by the older cousin of a school mate friend of mine. It was driven on the street for a while then converted to a Super Stocker and run in the SS/D class beginning somewhere around 1969.
Fast forward to the late-1980s: I found out who the original owner was quite by accident one day at Raceway Park when I struck up a conversation with a guy named Fred who was hanging around this car in the pits. Fred told me he once owned a Hemi Road Runner--this one-- purchased it from a guy in New Brunswick named Jimmy Jackson. I exclaimed,"Hey, I know that car! It belonged to the cousin of a school friend of mine! I never saw it but heard about it." Fred went on to relate to me how his Road Runner was stolen a couple times in the late 1970s and was lucky to recover it both times.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/18/2206:31 PM
Pro as in PRO STOCK and not the vernacular used for a certain bracket racing class. Yes, that's what Pro Stock cars originally looked like and just how far removed from the original concept of this eliminator so-called 'Pro Stock' cars of today are. I have to point that out for the younger crowd lest they think this Duster is just another garden-variety bracket car.
If you seen these cars back in the day like this (then) kid did, you'd know just how bad-ass and exciting they were to watch.

That would have been Illigal You'd probably find that the front wheels were moved forward as well. They (tech officials) checked the wheel base not the location so much. That’s what makes those cars so cool to look at as there are a bunch of "Adjustments" that on to themselves go un noticed but put one next to an off the show room floor car and you will see the adjustments

Back when Pro Stockers looked like REAL cars and looked really cool unlike today's so-called Pro Stockers who are, in reality, Pro Mod-type cars with absolutely nothing in common (outside of brand affiliation) with their OEM counterparts.

This was from a fire, they are Rodney Coleman's and he is looking for a way to restore them. Buying replacements is an option but he does not want to spend that kind of money.
This is a link his Facebook post, don't know if it will work for everyone.

Some people are just that way. A friend of mine has two younger brothers. One of them sounds like he is bigtime country, he wasn't raised that way, his brothers don't talk that way either lol. If hadn't know him since he was a 11-12 years old and if he didn't look exactly like his brothers I would have sworn he was adopted! They are ford people though maybe that is the problem?

Dick was often there early and would tell some of his stories, was incredible to mix and know some 1 of the great factory Mopar guys.. I recall when he got 1 of the 1st Hemi 6.1 Magnums, he showed me the dyno sheet getting 50HP more than the factory rated spec.. He was thrilled..
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 10/21/2205:04 PM
my brother and i met Landy and his wife one year [a LONG time ago] at carlisle while i was on a "practice tree" thing that was set up. unbeknownst to us, Dick had been standing behind us, watching me "cut lights". he remarked at how good and consistent my lights were. my brother then told him i was always pretty good at doing that, but it had been 10 years or more [at that time] since i had been down the track. then Dick challenged me to see who was better at the light game machine. i can't recall how many "lights" were involved in the challenge, but i beat him by three ! afterward, my brother and i talked to him and his wife for a bit until he had to move on. what a gracious couple they were ! we are so lucky to have met him. R.I.P. sir !

This was about 1974 at Northstar drag strip in the Mpls/St Paul area. I got the car out this fall after a 32 year hiatus and made a few passes. Damn that felt good! Can't wait for spring now.

How long has the 8-3/4” been in it at this E.T. ? Spool? Transmission brake ?

Transman- The car is a fairly new build- August of 2022. It’s a 30 spline spool and a Turboaction reverse manual valve body. Low rpm launch makes it live a long time. This car was built using lots of parts that Ive accumulated over 35 years. My old Belvedere was built using the same principle and it lasted for years.

Thanks, was wondering on how much life you got out of the 8-3/4 as I am planning on building something close to yours A Body.

I bought this car new in 1973, it was my daily driver for a couple of years, then slowly progressed to a race only car. I tore it apart in 1982 and built a Pro Stock style chassis for it. In 1984 I sold it to a guy in central Illinois, before it was completely finished. I've often wondered where it is today??
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 12/11/2211:50 PM
3rd Annual Funny Car Reunion, July 25th, 2004, Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ. This restored Top Fuel dragster was even more beautiful if you saw it in person.
Btw, the late Pat Foster, top funny car driver from the 1960s-70s era, restored the Jade Grenade. That's Pat with the Hawaiian shirt and pony tail, with his back to the camera.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 12/18/2206:59 PM
Jade Grenade...that's a Pat Foster restoration. Worked with Pat and Jim Hume sometimes in the late '70s when he shared shop space at Jim Hume's H&H Racecraft shop. (My boss & I did fiberglass work on the FC bodies and hung out at all hours...) Pat was utterly without fear, a great story-teller, helluva fabricator, and generally a blast to be around, as was Hume. LOTS of stories to tell about that place and the funny stuff that went on there; fond memories...

Thanks for sharing that story. Some trivia: at that race that, late afternoon, as I was walking up the steps to go up into the tower, who do I see? Pat Foster walking down the opposite way. I said, "Hey Pat!", he acknowledged me and said hello in return. From that brief interaction I sensed that he was a cool dude and I was correct based on your comments.

The Savvy Savoy is not a 63, it's 64. The roof lines are different between 63 and 64 Bob Roles from Williamsport Pa. used to own the car. I haven't seen it in about 10 years then it showed up at the Mopar Madness race at Dragway 42 this summer. So it's still in the Pa/Oh area.

Was a cool car he built for sure. I'm not sure what happened to Terry after he sold the car?

Great seeing the pictures from Englishtown and the Mopar Atlantic Nats!!! I attended all 32 of them except maybe one or two due to rain . Cool picture of the Maroon Dart Sport stocker. My close friend purchased the red 57 Vette in the other lane 5 years ago , the previous owner raced it for over 40 years for most of that time with a stick in it , now with a power glide and still being raced.

I'm glad someone out there has something to say about these photos.
I attended the very first event in 1985 (or was in 1984?) when it was a small event and dubbed Mopars at Englishtown all the way up to 1996 event. I've got plenty more photos I'll post in the days and weeks to come.
I'm glad this Corvette is still around. I'm a longtime diehard 4-speed man and this 'vette was one of very few bracket cars with a stick in it so naturally it attracted my attention. I believe it was a Junior Stocker way back in the late 1960s to 1971 era.
Here's a few more photos. Make sure your friend sees them. They were taken around 1990.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/23/2304:15 AM
Here's George's other car, a 1969 1/2 440 Six Barrel 4-speed Road Runner that he bought brand new in 1969. George told me he paid the car off after a few weeks of street racing it in the New York city area.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/23/2303:11 PM
Thanks … the Vette today, still running the hi compression 302 Chevy motor , power glide and 5.13 gears he bought it with , just started gathering parts to build a 383 pump gas motor for it
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/23/2303:50 PM
Qwik426- I have been lurking just enjoying the posts but a big thank you for sharing these. It is definitely appreciated. Great stuff including the brand x. I think I was at the 98 Englishtown event with my car. If you have a yellow 68 dart with primer spots and a big pro stock hood scoop or no hood and tunnel ram, that's me! (I probably didn't make the grade but ya gotta ask)

Sounds like fun. I wish I still had my 1968 GTX. It had a basically stock 426 Street Hemi with Hooker 2-1/8" headers w/4-speed in it w/3.54 Dana, then a full-race 440 with auto trans for street/strip use. No, not a Hemicar. I'd still own it if was.
Waiting in the tech line at Raceway Park, Friday, June 17th, 1988. 426 HEMI powered.

Thanks lurker. The last year I attended was 1996. No, sorry, don't have a photo of your car. This is the only photo I have from the Mopar Atlantic Nationals (circa 1992) with a yellow Dodge Dart, a 1969 Dart GT model, a rare one, factory 440 U-code car.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/25/2308:42 AM
A few more photos from the Mopar Atlantic Nationals circa 1991. I have no precise date because all the photos I took back then, the photo developing lab did not print a date on the back of the photos.
This photo is from a few years later.
Those were really great shows. I wish I snapped a lot more photos. I do have more photographs but wish I had even more. Oh well, you know how it goes, 20//20 hindsight vision.

Cool seeing the white Hemi Darts at the Mopar Atlantic Nats ... I don't remember them but then again I was usually to busy racing to look at the show cars.. I don't see any pictures of my Dart either but it is still great to see pictures of some of the Mopars that attended the meet over the years. Some years I would get a hotel room and stay there Friday and Saturday nights racing all three days despite only living about an hour away. Lots of good times and memories !
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/25/2310:15 PM
11secdart- I was pitted across from you in 98 (!) and have seen you race there and at the Valley several times. I probably have a few photos of your car from back in the day. It was a great show and I am still mad it died.
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/25/2310:57 PM
It was a great show even in the later years when attendance wasn’t very good . I always enjoyed it , some years I raced my Dart , some years my D150 , I ran my Dart in 11.50 index there right up until they closed .

Do you have any photos of your Dart? I may have seen it at Raceway Park.

Mopars at Englishtown, June 1989 (that date I'm sure of), Saturday afternoon. I couldn't make it on Sunday (because I had to work) and watch these cars run and listen to stick shift master Ronnie Sox bang through the gears. I believe Bob Reed piloted the Motown Missile if it ran on Sunday. I know he did at other events.
I don't recall why I didn't take a photo of the S & M Pro Stock Colt (at right)!
Ronnie Sox in the background wearing red & white cap.

I believe this "under the tent" tech seminar was from the 1990 event. Dick Landy was not present at the first one (1989) so I believe that date is correct.
Name 'em! (Check out the 'state of the art' PA system. Lol)
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/26/2307:55 AM
From the 1994 race? Like I said earlier, there are no dates printed on the back of the photos so I have to rely on guestimation.
I believe this is from the 1995 race. This car was featured in an issue of Mopar Collector's Guide a couple or so months earlier and I was pleasantly surprised to see it there and had the pleasure of checking out this very low mileage Road Runner up-close.

Hey photo posters- Are you scanning these old original printed pictures and resizing them to a certain max size? I have a few I can share but want to know the best way and the size limit on the file. I want to shed my lurker status!
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 01/26/2306:00 PM
Mine are pictures of pictures , I just post them from the photo gallery on my phone and edit / size them to her smaller than 4 , I don't know how to scan

Its a nice car, could use a nice coat of paint .. this one is scratched up and not done very well , that car probably will not get used much in 2023 , my new toy is almost done, it should be running real soon
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 02/25/2306:04 PM
info on Classracer. com ,.....it happened at the Division 7 points meet at Wild Horse Raceway in Arizona .. it is believed that the RO23 had something happen and spun ... track both drivers are uninjured ... its shame two nice cars totaled ... a C/SA 69 Cuda went on to Win Stock Eliminator !!!
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/11/2312:46 PM
Chuck Rayburn .. he has had the car for many years .. he switches back and forth between Stock and Super / Stock .. a few of the early B motor / B body AA/SA, A/SA and B/SA cars also fit in SS/BA thru SS/DA with no changes.. sometimes due to the national meet car quotas they can't get into a national meet with the grade points they have into Stock so they enter S/S instead .. Denny Sanders had a Gold 64 Dodge in Stock
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/11/2303:35 PM
Denny car was, maybe he still owns it , was an off white stock color, definitely not gold. I've known him since the mid 1970s, long before he found and bought his M.W. 4 speed car original car, I think he bought and started racing it in the mid to late 1970s. His father had race M.W. cars back in the day according to him when Denny was young, before his dad died. He moved up to the Mojave Desert in the 1980s, we moved out of there in 2005. I remember seeing him and his wife at one the Mopar only races in Las Vegas in the late 2000 teens, he was racing it in one the stock, SS combo classes, I think 40+ yrs. of racing together, my how time has flown
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/11/2305:44 PM
There was a Bob Elliot that raced a black 1963 M.W. Dodge Coronet in the early 1970s in Division 7, I'm not sure if they are one and he same. The Bob I knew was a good guy and a good racer I've known and race with a bunch of Division & NHRA racers in both S/S. Stock, S/ST and S/G up to 1988 when I quit racing in NHRA divisional and National races due to the politics in their organization and at there events
Re: Random MOPAR DRAG RACE pic of the Day - 05/11/2306:01 PM
Funny you should mention the NHRA politics .. I was just talking to one of the Bardekoff brothers ( their father used to own the 64 Belvedere that Darren Grossi drives / owns ) they were at a local tracks Nostalgia meet with their gorgeous SS/ GTF 68 Barracuda ( has a Drag Pak motor ) and they said the same thing they got tired of the NHRA b.s. they now run Mustangs in one of the outlaw classes

hang in there Steve ! i have health issues as well, i'm a tad older, but i won't be done with these dadgummed MO[PAR]chines until i get planted ! in fact, my earliest memory of life, which was a tick less than a year old, involved the landlord running over my toy car ! i was doomed from the start !

Lots of cool pics. Reminds me of high school back in 75. Two friends each had 69 GTO's with the 400 V8, one had a 3-spd the other a 4-spd. My future BIL, Dave, at the time worked sales at the local Plymouth dealership. Called me to meet him on west College Ave in Appleton (no development out there then) with Rob in his 69 Goat (3-spd). Meet Dave out there and he is driving a 70 Hemi Cuda, with the Torque-flight automatic. We lined up, me and Rob in his Goat, Dave in the Cuda. Dave said, "just yell go", I did, and that Cuda simply pasted Rob in his Goat, not even a chance against the mighty Hemi.
Another night Rob and I are just driving around and came across a guy that lived near my parents. He was driving, I think, a 64 Fury with the 440 wedge. We gave him a run and the Goat did ok once moving, but the Mopar Wedge took him then too. Ahh, back in the days of gas for $0.35 a gallon. Fun times. We "floated" the speedo needle something past 120 a couple of times. Reality was likely closer to about 105 with those old inaccurate speedos.

I'm working on mine Turbo 360 with EFI and hopefully on local pump E85. I want to learn EFI tuning and get some hands on experience with a turbocharged car, not shooting for the moon, 600 HP is my current goal

I've been lucky to know John's son, David. His boys were pretty young when he died. Both boys turned into great people. David currently races his Dad's old 70 Cuda Pro Stocker. John would be proud.

Several years ago I was going back and forth with a guy who went by Storm King. He was making fiberglass and carbon fiber 66 dart stretch nose parts. I found this pic on the web. I’m guessing he’s one of them.

Great pics B Dartman- even the "going nowhere" 'cuda. Does the Pro Stock Challenger have a motor and was the paint fixed or is it being displayed "as found". Are there plans to restore it back to its glory days or was that already done?

Rock Falls late last year. Was so glad someone shot this photo. I can't believe I've had this since the early 70's. Couldn't figure out why so many guys running there looked so old......

i like those cars too dad ! i owned a 64[1/2] way back with a 273/pushbutton 904 combo. that thing ran like stink and got 26 mpg on the interstate driving back and forth to work. however, my old man killed it when he dead centered a phone pole in the middle of a field to avoid running into a guy that stopped in front of him abruptly.
