Need PN for for Dana rear axle seal - 02/08/18 01:23 PM

I need to replace a leaky axle seal on my rear end.
Anyone know the correct part number, I see at least 2 listed, and they have different dimensions?
70 Challenger, Dana 60

Any tips on the R&R is appreciated too

Thx

70 challenger service manual here:

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

takes a minute to open

National Oil Seal 51098

save your old seal to compare to the new one, many parts stores list the WRONG seal, it will be a little to big (outside diameter)

hi,
the listing is for inner and outer, the outer is bigger dia. it is for the dust seal on bearing retainer plate

Now I'm really confused, there are 2 seals behind the backing plate?
I thought there was a single seal that needs to be replaced when the axle is pulled?

https://www.ebay.com/p/1966-1973-NOS-Mopar-Dana-Rear-Axle-Bearing-Kit-3683966/1923660357 This axle bearing kit shows the outer seal that 440lebaron was referring to. It will be on the axle not in the housing.

the thin steel one goes between the b plate & the housing end & the foam gasket goes on the other (outer) side of the plate against the axle retainer. You might fab an L hook with a slide hammer to pull the old seal straight out without nicking any area in the housing ID & HF I believe has a cheapie, not a dealbreaker but a caveat & it is a real good idea to have the plate off of the axle end before pulling it out (& gives you a simpler unobstructed work area there). first measure how far "in" the old seal was so you can drive the new seal inward that same distance. before installing the new seal, clean the housing end & generously swab some sealant around the housing ID at the distance in where the new seal will end up. get a round flat metal thick plate a hair less than the OD of the seal & a drift with flat ends & critical, get the seal started in square with several medium taps then drive it in the rest of the way with fairly hard hits makeing sure it stay square & if it gets tilted just put the drift on the high area of the plate & whack it there easy till it levels out. each whack increases the chances of the seal being distorted so accomplish this with as few strokes as possible within reason. also first put a generous amount of wheel bearing grease on the garter spring on the back side of the seal before starting to drive it in. If you mess up a seal just get another one at your parts house (they're fairly cheap) & this area must be sealed. confirm you have the right seals which ain't an issue from the Doc but parts house items are a different story, just hold the seal in the housing & see if there is just a slight interference. EDIT this is for an 8&3/4, I'm assuming the Dana is the same for this part of it.

I wish I put that number down. When I did my Dana 60, everyone lists the 8-3/4 and Dana the same and my '69 Coronet, the Dana took a different size (outer diameter) axle tube seal.

Try this thread, I think it had the info:

After digging through that other link and some web search, I'm going with National 481837.
As a bonus, RockAuto has these on warehouse close out for $0.95 each.

Re: Need PN for for Dana rear axle seal - 02/11/18 01:08 AM

There are 3 different seals with 3 different widths for the Dana 60. My originals said National 34419 which I'm finding out was a Spicer part #.

473228 - 1.5000 x 2.5060 x 0.3125 (Double Lip)
481837 - 1.5000 x 2.5060 x 0.3750 (Single Lip) * Same width as my originals*
51098 - 1.5000 x 2.5060 x 0.4375 (Single Lip)

You don't know which ones you need until you pull out your original ones. That's what I'm finding out. I went thru this about 5 months ago.

Thanks for the confirmation, the critical dimension I was worried about is the inside and outside diameters.
All 3 you listed will work with the only difference being a +/- 1/16" on the metal housing width.

These seals worked perfectly in me 1968 B body Dana 60.
Duralast 481837

I was trying to post a picture but I guess the days when it was easy are gone.

The 1968 and 1969 23 spline(or whatever splines they where)axles are smaller than the 1970, 1971 35 spline axles, which needs the bigger inner axles seals, I think scope
