It's 1/16" away from the tower. The tower is not dented in and as far as I know it's the original K-member and unit. Is this normal factory spacing?

You could probably loosen the mounting bolts and push it over and retighten to gain some clearance.

The factory K member to frame rail bolts are special, with a shoulder to "align" the K member correctly. Are you using the OEM style bolts?

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

If its a 70 b-body yes its that close. Mine is that way, might be able to slip a piece of paper in there. It might be tolerance stack up.

Wow! From the factory? Really? Can't believe it won't rattle around corners.

Do you know the history of the car? What has been changed around, and so forth?

I dont know, noticed that on mine this week, looked at 2 other 70 roadrunners and they are also 1/16" or less from shock tower, all hamtramk built cars. I am mounting mine on a chief ezliner this month as a first step in restoration, be interesting to see how it measures out. I like to mount the car by the pinch welds, square it up then align the doors, then I know what I have. I see no damage but that dont mean much, the flat plate and measurements will tell all.
