No, this is not a joe dirt question, "How does it work, I dunno, it just does"

I just picked up an 8-3/4 rear for my project.

When I turn one axle by hand, the other side goes the opposite direction.

However, when I turn the yoke by hand, both wheels turn the same direction.

I was expecting an opposite direction here.

So any thoughts? Sure grip or one legger rear?

I will be taking it apart soon and will find out for sure, but at this point I am scratching my head.

That is an open rear.

When you spin one wheel, the side gears in the differential cause the axles to spin in opposite directions. The differential is not rotating.

When you turn the pinion, the ring gear and differential are turning, causing both axles to spin in the same direction

Turning the yoke on a one legger will turn both wheels the same way as long as nothing is holding one wheel back. Turning one wheel with the yoke held in place will turn the other the opposite way with a one legger.

You have a one legger... or there is a slight possibility its a sure grip with the clutches or cone completly "gone away".
