I just installed a Nippondenso 102mm alternator with ~50 amp advertised in my Barracuda small block with aluminum 70-up water pump and 69 down cast iron water pump.

I tested it all last week on the current small block motor in my car with cast iron water pump (69-down). That was a temporary deal and the belt was about a 1/2 grove (1/4") off line. If I bent the original alternator bracket back offset that amount, I would be good to go.

BTW in case you wanted to know...

THIS THING WORKS AWESOME!

I got the 102mm mini Nippondenso single V-groove pulley from like a Chevy Sprint 1985-88 in the junkyard. But the part number 31400-83010 corresponds to a Suzuki Samurai 1.3L 1986-1989, Chevy Sprint 85-88, Suzuki Swift 84-89 and possibly others. It seems to come in 45, 55, 60 amp versions from rebuilders. Mine tested fine at the parts store. It is the same physically as powermaster p/n 8122/8128 6.78 lbs. 102 mm. ( http://www.powermastermotorsports.co...ternators.html ) The stock ones are not one wire like the powermaster ones. But they have an internal regulator.

The alternator bolt holes that go to the head attachment need to be drilled out a little to accept the larger bolt.

I even used the existing brackets. But it was just a mock up on this 64-69 SB cast iron water pump housing. The alternator pulley was about a half to one groove off. Ok for driving around a little and testing, but not right for a permanent setup.

One way to correct the fitment issue would be to remove material of the backside on the front alternator ear. Or better, if I bent the orginal alternator bracket back offset between 1/4" to 1/2" amount, I would be good to go. Take the origal alternator adjuster bracket and shorten the engine side to fit.

For the 70- up aluminum water pump housing the fitment was even easier. We just cut down spacers to fit from HD sway bar end link kits of all things.

For the wiring just connect the input and output of the single field regualtor that goes to the back of the orginal alternator. I connected that to the "I" or “IG” Ingnition port of the Denso alternator. Same green wire that went to my alternator before. Then for the "S" sense port, I ran a jumper directly to the battery. Then the big output lug to the harness bolted on...

DONE!

Drove the car and night, NO dimming at idle. I mean nothing. Even with every electrical item I had turned on. I even put it in gear, revved it quick and jumped off the thottle so it would rev down to 400 rpm. Just an ever so hint of a dim lugged down to 400 rpm. With the previous alternator, the night before I could hardly see my instrument lights at idle! This Denso thing is AWESOME.

Alternator guage is still hooked up and didn't falter a bit. The voltage in the battery was 12.2v non running. Running it was 13.8 then would slowly climb to 14.1-2. When you put all the electrical draw on it, it wouldn't even change a tenth of a volt!

70-up aluminum water pump fitment.

69-down cast iron water pump fitment. Temporary mockup. Not permenent fitment or wiring

Hope this helps?

This alternator rebuilt is around $60-$90 at the part places it seems.

Someone just pointed out to me that the even lighter 5.5 lbs alternators with 1 wire hookup are now being sold on ebay for $74. The 1 wire hookup is really cool!

I looked up a 86 Suzuki Samarai alternator is like $127 w/o core and w/core still around $130.

I also didn't realize that AndyF has brackets for the 5.5 lbs ultra mini alternator with mechanical fuel pump. So you could buy his brackets AND the $74 ebay 1 wire deal for about the price of a rebuilt heavier alternators with 3 wire hookup.

Anyone know what a stock old mopar alternator weighs?

Type in the E-bay search: NEW CHEVY MINI ALTERNATOR DENSO STREET ROD RACE 1-WIRE!

ARengineering.com has the brackets under AR096 Race alternator for small block.

Let me look around a little more, I cant seem to find where I wrote it down. I did comparison weighing of all the parts I replaced for lighter weight equivalents. Starter, Alternator, M/C etc.

I've had a bracket kit for the small Powermaster 8172 in my product line for a number of years. Part number AR096.

Yep. I have one of AndyF's brackets setups and hanging on my 470" with a Denso alternator. I also found a company selling a replacment plug/connector for those alternators. Andy has that info on his website.

You need to specify exactly which Denso alternator you are refering too. There are numerous popular sizes and configurations. I believe www.arengineering.com has different brackets for different alternator styles.

Here's a decent list of some of them with ID pictures and dimensions: http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/denso_alternators.html

I wonted to use the 50 amp alternator on a big block. Could you also
give a link to the bracket and the plug needed if possible. Thanks for your time.

I'm sorry, I thought you only made a low mount no mechanical fuel pump for for 93mm 5.68 lbs Denso Ultra Mini Alternator. I don't see AR096 listed on your website?

Std alternator for a 68 340 without A/C is 48amps.

Std alternator for a 68 383/440/426 is 70 amps.

AndyF do you think a big block car with no A/C, no electric fans, no high watt radio, AND with a newer type Denso starter that draws less amps could use a the Ultra Mini 50amp 8172 style alternator?

http://www.arengineering.com/alternatorbracket/ND_bracket/denso.html I belives the kit you would be looking for is 8172BB . AndyF is this correct?

I've had a big-block race alternator kit available for a long time.

The alternator I took off weighed 14lb including regulator, Denso 60amp (4Runner) I put on weighs 9.75 lb

RokketRide:

If it's not too much trouble, could you please post the weights of all the other items you had mentioned with the weight savings?

I'm into getting rid of as much weight as I can!!!

Thanks!

What's the difference between that alternator and the later Denso alternators from the late 80s cars and trucks (other than lower output)?

I've been running a 130 amp Denso off a 318 truck for a couple years.

It's hard to see in this pic since it's under the radiator hose but it's the only shot I've got access to now.
