I purchased a pertronix plug and play distributor for my 67 440.. I just threw it in to get the car running and now I am playing with the advance..

The lighter springs for more advance quicker is a no brainer but there are 3 sets of Mechanical advance limiters.. They are small L shaped pieces of metal that fit under the springs.. What has me thrown is after taking out the rotor there are no advance limiters already on the distributor.. Do I need a set installed?? Without a set installed will my mech advance advance too far?? A little lost here..

Gotta be pretty similar to the MSD distributor in the fact that the other pieces affect the total amount of advance timing you will get from distributor. The only thing that will throw off is where you set your initial timing at. When setting your initial timing you should work backwards meaning bring your RPM up till you have full mechanical advance(2500RPM) roughly and set your total timing around 32-36 degrees. This will put your initial timing where it needs to be, if it is too low then add the l shaped piece to limit total advance and start over.

So your saying I need to find the total mechanical advance of my distributor and I can dial it back, if its too much, with these limiters??

That is exactly right. You set your total timing by reving engine to point where no more timing advance occurs and set to say 35 degrees. Let of the accelerator and see where timing rest at idle. Should be around 10 degrees initial. No limiters in distributor ought to allw about 25 degrees of total advance. Should you want 15 degrees of initial advance then you need to choose the limiter that only 20 degrees of mechanical advance.

FYI - I bought the Pertronix plug and play for my 440 and checked the curve with a dial back timing light. It was right on the money to the curve Mr. Eburg recommends in this Mopar Action tech question -
