ive got a nice solid flat tappet cam thats ready to go in my street driven 440 dart sport. before i commit to going solid im wondering that my car will run probably just as good with a hyd cam. the main reason for going hyd is the cost. im on such a super budget that every houndred here or there i can save is what i need to do. ive got a list of things i need to buy to get this car where i want it. anyway compare these two cams and tell me what you think.

440 undecked/uncut heads
2295 domes ?? in the hole
cast crank ly rods good bolts
ported stealth heads
torker 2 850 holley
2 in pro parts
4k stall (9inch) 3.70 gear 26inch slick
im thinking 3500lbs with me

solid cam i have ready to go in is comp custom 250,255 530 540 108
158 and 160 @200 respectively tight lash lobe intake hightorque lobe on exh this cam would certainly run well but needs $$$ rockers

ultradyne custom hyd cam option is 247 lobe 530 lift would be 108 lsa on that one too. its 161 @ 200. good thing about this one is the use of the HD rockers. we can put the centerlines wherever they need to be. no mess no fuss no adjusters to break no pushrods to burn up etc..

i know the solid is better all around no question but with a rpm limit on the gear and cheaper shortblock i think the juice cam will bang gears at 6-6200 and kick ass. id like to crack a 10 with this car on pump gas and i think if the weight stays low it can be done.

ive got the solid listed for sale but i cant decide what to do. i could go ethier way.. thanks

Although I think the current comp solid could be slightly better, if you keep the rpm limited to 6000 they will be close. But IMO, 440 cubes with ported aluminum aftermarket heads will like over 6000 rpm and that is where I like to cut off using a hydraulic flat tappet cam.

Don't be surprised that the hyd will idle worse and have worse off idle throttle feel (street driving). In my street 440 Cuda I ran a similar size hydraulic, and now the MP 0.557" cam (similar duration to yours, but not as aggressive) and I prefer driving the solid on the street. I ran both with iron adjustable rockers.

I could not agree more.

If you are that tight on the budget, run the hydraulic and save funds for an upgrade later, when you can.

I sure like the solid and agree absolutely. I wish there was some
Cheaper rocker options that would work at 325 open pressures

If I had to run a hyd cam the older UD hyd cams are a great choice and I use them in builds for street/strip guys that don't want a solid cam. They are very stable and make good power. I do agree the solid should be slightly better in the low rpms. I'm not sure the solid will run quicker at the track. Sounds like an interesting test.

if you're using the stamped rockers with the hydraulic, you'll no doubt lose some lift (they typically check around 1.45:1 or less), BUT, they are very light and very reliable. several thousand years ago i had a 340 street racer, and revved that thing over 7000 daily with an hydraulic cam and the stamped rockers (the heavy duty ones). that engine ran for many years, and i finally sold it (running). i've run solids on the street, too, and they work fine. i think you'd be real close between those cams.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

530 UD lobe + sloppy 1.4xx rockers still = 500 lift where theheads flow nice!
