I polished up my Dodge redline dog dish hubcaps the other day and took the paint off doing so. What is the easiest way to repaint these? Was someone selling a paint mask kit at one point?

I'm not sure a template exists. If it does I have not seen or heard of it. If you want to repaint the red circle use thin electrical tape on a warm day. It's much easier to turn corners with than paper based masking tape.

I took all the dead paint off of my hubcaps and had zero luck trying to mask the black parts off around the outside. Not happy with my painting results I went and drew up a cad file of everything and then had black and red decals cut from sign vinyl on a plotter.

Green masking tape and brand new blade in the X-acto knife.

Oh yea, lots of patience.

Sorry to drag this back up but Im doing/did the same thing. To me painting the red circle shouldnt be too hard with a bit of masking but how about the black in the finned areas as well as inside the Fratzog in the center?

Love to see how your decals turned out as well

Mask off most of the hubcap. Spray the black. Wipe off the places you don't want it using a smooth rag with some laquer thinner. Put the hubcap on something that spins slowly and paint the red circle with a pinstripping brush as it turns.

3M blue pinstripe masking tape, flexible and stays put for the red circle. I used Testors Italian Red to bomb the circle

I thinned some testors flat black and brushed it on the perimeter recessed areas, then quickly wiped the raised portions w/a rag.

Here you go.

This cap, along with the other three, have paint for the red circle, but I do have a spare hubcap with red vinyl instead of paint. It's all cut from exterior grade sign vinyl so it should last a long time.

Holee crap Neil, that thing is gorgeous!! how long on the wheel did it take you to get it like that?
I do have a SS set that I am working on.

I did a little practice on a spare one I had (all dented up) came out pretty good after about 40 mins on the wheel but pics hide the small scratches still present when looked at with the eye.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys! Italian Red model paint huh? I think I actually have that color!

Mine have super small scratches/light haziness in them to, but the indoor lighting hides it. Stainless steel, even when buffed to the max, will never look like chrome plating. Out in the sunlight they still look super nice.

I wet sanded mine down with 1000, 1500, 2000 grit etc. paper and then put them on a spare wheel and buffed the face with a car buffer and some mothers mag polish. I then took them off and set the buffer down on the ground with a zip tie on the trigger to keep it running and then buffed out the edges by holding the side of the caps against the buffer pad and slowly rotating them at the same time. The stainless can get super hot after long periods of buffing so wear gloves or let them cool off every so often so your hands don't get blistered.

I did go over them later on with some stainless rouge and a cotton buffer wheel out of curiosity, but it didn't seem to make them any shinier than the mag polish did.

I still have the cad file so if you have access to a sign shop that can cut the vinyl out and want to try the decal method let me know.

Thanks Neil. Is the decal only for the red or for the black areas as well?

Both colored areas are part of the file, but you don't have to use the red.

The original red/orange color on the caps is hard to duplicate in vinyl so I went with paint on the first four caps. The paint color is Mazda (or Nissan?) 'flame red' I picked from the paint chip booklet at the paint store. It's red indoors, but leans towards orange in the sunlight.

So the black area in that pic is a decal? Can you send the file?

Thanks again!

Yes, all the black areas you see are vinyl.

I have the file on my work computer so I can't send it today. I can send it tomorrow instead.

Also, I can save the file into various formats depending on what type of software the sign shop uses. Let me determine what my 'save-as' options are again, and then you can ask your sign shop if they can work with any of those. I'd bet that few sign shops have Autocad so if I sent you the native .dwg file the sign shop wouldn't be able to open it.

Hey Neil, sorry to bring up this ancient thread, but I've been looking forever for some sort of template for the black areas on these caps. I know it's a long shot, but do you still happen to have the files for this? I think any format will do, even a jpeg. But CAD or pdf would be nice too. Anyway, I sent you a PM with my email, really hoping you still have this. Thanks again

I have found the use of paint pens very helpful.
