The entire heads were rebuilt-new guides, valves,valve springs,reatainers, hardened exhaust seats, mild port job when the motor was sent off to the machinist, that was back in '99. Since then, 7,000 miles on the motor; no smoke on the first start of the day or when you decelerate which I've always understood as signs of bad guides.

No that would be signs of bad SEALS , the guides have clearance and a little oil could get past that clearance.
