Hey everyone - I want to replace the Carter AFB on my 1969 Super Bee with a new one. Where is a good source to buy a stock (or close to stock) replacement?

Thanks!!

I think federal mogual quit making new ones years ago. Now your choices are to buy a decent used one and service it, have your original rebuilt, or buy an edelbrock version which is based off the original carter models.

The new edelbrock avs carburetors with the adjustable air door work better than the carter afb's, but they don't look 100% original. You can get parts easily and they come with a warranty and good technical support.

If you want factory original have yours rebuilt or buy another correct year core carburetor and have it gone through.

You can always buy a used 80's or 90's competition series carter off ebay or moparts for $100.00 or so and then clean it up and put new gaskets and floats in it. These don't look like your stock 1969 carburetor either, but all the new edelbrock service parts drop right in.

An AFB would not be stock for your '69

If not an AFB, then what is the correct carb for my car?
Neil - the edelbrock seems like a good idea for reliability and performance, but it does not look original enough. I am not doing a 100 percent concours resto, but the carb should look right.
We drove the car for the first time yesterday!! However, it idles really poorly under 1400 rpm, plus we are finding that we cannot seem to adjust the thing (no noticeable results when turning screws). The carb was apparently rebuilt.

Carter AVS. EDIT they look very much alike ex AVS has the spring loaded secondary air door (looks like a choke plate but it's on the secondary side) & you'll see the spring.

Yuor car had an AVS , its been out of production for decades . Bthe Ebrock thunder series is the only carb that is close in function and appearance to the AVS .

Talk to Scott Smith , I'm sure he could make one look like the old AVS , buy the 650 Thunder series , don't buy the one with the Endura finish.

Right,

No Carters have been available new for quite some time. Edelbrock bought them out and now sells them with thier own updates and modifications. If you don't plan on rebuilding/reusing your original at least save it as they are number and date specific to your application and could be difficult to replace down the road. The number will vary depending on how your car is optioned. Post a list of your cars options and I'll let you know which number your car should have had.

I'm definitely keeping the carb - it might be the original one for my car.
I guess the thing to do is buy an Edelbrock carb and use it since I plan on driving my car. The Carter can go into hibernation until I am ready to have it properly restored.
So, is Summit a good place to buy it, or are there better dealers out there?

Keep in mind that the new Edelbrocks have the bigger top dia. and may not fit your original air cleaner base opening. Also, the price of a new carb will probably be as much or more than what you'd pay a restorer to make your old one as good as new again.

(hint, hint )

Here's an example of one I recently restored (before pic)

If it's an AFB it's NOT the original carb , my guess is he is confusing the 2 .

Not that it matters he's replacing it.

new bee , check Summit, Jegs, price will be roughly the same.

Only thing you need to figure out is what king of choke you want, adapt the original setup or just buy one with the electric choke.

if it is an AVS(& the original one) then he would want to know that before he makes his decision. Yes it's very easy to confuse the two.

All we need is a number and it will be really easy to ID regardless, AVS/AFB, etc.

It's likely I am confusing the two.
Since the car is sitting in a garage 25 miles from here, I cannot confirm.
So, the original ramchager air cleaner might not fit?
That is not what I want to hear. Scott, how quickly can you restore my carb? I want to drive the car before summer is over.

For what it's worth my 1970 340 aircleaner fits on the top of the new 650 and 800 edelbrock avs carbs just fine. No spacer/airhorn adapter ring needed.

They are the long valve econo W2's. It's a 408 rather than a 340 also.
