No not that. Got ya to look tho huh? My 8 3/4 742 chunk has a pionon problem. I was going to change the seal and when I got the old seal out the pinion shaft wobbles all over. This is not right is it?
So I have another axel but it has smaller brakes and I just bought all new parts for the 3 1/2 inch brakes. Do I swap in another chunk or swap the whole axel and then change to the bigger brake backing plates? The donor is a 741. I know not ideal but it is what I have. Also the seal I got at Car Quest is part number 5126. A moog part. It fits the pinion shaft but not the housing. The counter guy told me this was the bigger of the two he could get.
Thanx in advance all.

I just bought a good used 741 sure grip & when I took the yoke off to ch the seal it gave the pinion all kinds of play. Not finished back together but on mockup the yoke will restore it back OK

5126 is for a 489 case. 7126 is for the 742 case. It's in the tech archives under rear axle. Without the pinion nut on I'm sure you will have play until it is socked down. Did the rear have any strange sounds?

Been a long time but I don't remember it being a problem. So the pinion will flop around without the yolk. This is good news. It just kinda looked as if there is nothing holding the thing in place. So when I torque the yolk back in, it will tighten up again? I will try to look this up in the archives but usually have a hard time finding anything that way. I am dumber with computers, than with mechanics. Probably be faster trying it in the garage.
Thanks for the seal info. 7126 it is. I noticed the origanal was quite beefy. Will the replacement be just a seal, or was it that tough for a reason? Sorry for going on but I just gotta know.

Exactly & in fact I was getting ready to contact the guy I bought em from as the axles wouldn't even turn, you're fine

Just got back from Car Quest and the part number is actually
"7216" for the 742 case,
"8515" for the 741 case
"5126" for the 489 case.
numbers come from the rock auto site except,
they do not show the 489 for my application,
as it was not avalable in 68 yet.
A good place to shop
Just an F.Y.I.
