working on a fellow members 68 hemi roadrunner, installing his EZ EFI. to do this, i need to install the water temp sensor for the system.

the only threaed water ports i have been able to find so far are the sender for the temp gauge, and the heater hose inlets. there is one 1/4 inch pipe plug in the water pump hiusing on the drivers side, but that is plugged with a pipe plug and i need a bigger one anyway.

so what do you do for another sender location in a hemi? is there one that im missing in a head or something? how did you guys do it?

thanks for any help.

Michael

Thre was a few different water pump housings that were in the Hemi's and Big blocks. One one of my Hemis thre was actually three heater hose ports (one is plugged) and the tiny sensor for the temp guage. If you only have two, and you want to use the heater hoses, why not Tee off the outgoing one for your guage?

Use a different sender, look for one that will fit in the 1/4" pipe port. They should be standard GM style senders. Tim

Some water pump housings have a third large threaded hole that may be plugged. It is typicially used in 68 vintage C body for the HOT/Cold light feed.
Why dont you enlarge the 1/4 in hole you already have? Cast iron is pretty easy to work with..

i believe that its an aftermarket aluminum housing. ill have to check tomorrow.

is there enough meat there to safely drill and tap that area?

There is one on each side of my block. I don't remember the size, but I used them for my aftermarket temp sensor, and for my radiator fan switch.

The MP alum housing has three heater hose ports. Two on the upper part and one a step down with the 1/4 inch one on the drivers side of the housing (instead of the right). I used one of my heaterports for the large senders that is with the electic fan I installed.

In this picture you can see the two upper heater ports the other is hidden behind the alt bracket.

Mine is a 66 cast block. The ports I used were on each side- between the freeze plugs.

stock cast iron housing , 68 up ??? also have that same extra port .

OP , what year is the car you are working on ? But you say it has an alum housing ? also note , the port you guys are calling 1/4" for temp sender is tapped for 1/8-27 NPT , not really enough meat to tap is for the larger courser thread NPT .

working on a 68 hemi RR. has three ports on the passengers side, one for mech temp gauge and 2 for heater hoses. i believe that this motor was built with an aftermarket aluminum pump and housing, as well as the mopar repro block and heads. i know its got the mopar aluminum single 4 intake as well, with factory hemi manifolds.

so i cant drill and tap the drivers side, thats ok. ill take a look for the ones on the sides of the block.

failing that, i guess ill have to build a T fitting for where the mechanical water temp gaige is, and plug both in there. just have to find a way to make it pretty.

If you go in from the top on the drivers side you should be able to drill and tap that for the sensor. Do you know what type of housing it has? If it's a crate motor and it has the MP alum housing you should be fine and it should have a 1/8-27 NPT port there to give you an idea how thick it is , but you'll want to pull I think to drill and tap that ?
