It seems to me that the older housings could be worth saving if they have different ends welded on. There are some Ford axle ends I have heard of that use non tapered roller bearings. For people that want to narrow an axle for use in a tubbed car or a stock A body, this could be cheaper than a custom housing built from scratch. Dr Diff would be the man to contact on this one. As far as the center sections of the 1964 and older units, I would save everything if you have the room to store it. Keep everything DRY.

'62 and '63 used different axle lengths depending on whether it was SG or not, in '64 they changed the center thrust block in the open differential so the same length axle could be used on both. If the '62-'63 are SG they will work in a flanged axle rear end.
The tapered axle housings are good candidates for narrowing with new ends, don't toss any of them. Board member Doc Diff can supply flanged axles and Green bearings for some taper axle housings.

I sorry I'm highjacking the thread a little, but I was trying to remember this while cleaning the garage this past weekend.
*All sure grip reguardless of year have the same center trust block which is the same as non-taperred axle open diffs
*62-3 open require a longer axle
I just parted a 64 Belvedere with a open diff and a small diameter cross shaft. The carrier and ring gear was also smaller that a normal 8 3/4. It was a /6 auto car, perhaps early production if 64 opens indeed had a larger cross shaft?

The '64 /6 cars used an 8 1/4" carrier that fit in a standard 8 3/4" housing so they're technically not an 8 3/4".

'62-'65 /6 B bodies use the 8 1/4" carrier, the casting number should end in 448.
